How To Make Your Resume Stand Out

Considering you only have a matter of seconds to catch an employer's attention with your resume and for them to decide if they want to interview you or not, you're going to want to immediately highlight what makes you stand out. A good way to do this is to create a resume summary that highlights your job relevant skills, experience and talent. This way an employer can quickly see what makes you stand out from other job applicants and why it would be very beneficial for them to interview you.

So, how do you create a resume summary that helps you stand out? Start by making sure that the very first sentence of your summary is the most impactful sentence out of the entire paragraph. You want that first sentence to blow an employer away by your skills as well as show them that you have everything that they are looking for in their next employee. You want to try to include the following information in the first and second sentences of your summary paragraph.
  • Add a job specific or industry relevant adjective that describes who you are or your work style.
  • Show that you have job or industry relevant experience.
  • Add a job or industry relevant accomplishment and how it positively impacted the company. If you can quantify the result of your accomplishment by adding percentages or numbers, that would be beneficial.
Resume Summary Example

Detail-oriented data entry specialist with typing speed of 130+ WPM and 100% accuracy. Recognized consistently with performance awards for completing data entry projects weeks ahead of time and preventing loss of client contracts.

This summary immediately shows stand out skills to have as a data entry specialist. It's shows that you're detail-oriented, you're quick and accurate, you get tasks done ahead of time and you've been recognized for your great work. It also lets an employer see positive results related to the work you accomplish. If I were looking for a data entry specialist and these were the first two sentences that I read on a resume, I would immediately want to know more about this job applicant. So, make sure that your resume summary includes stand out information that would make an employer want to know more about you and invite you for an interview.
